Remember President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia has been in power for more than two decades. First, he came in as a young army officer through a military coup in 1994, then he transitioned to democracy and has been in power ever since.
Well, he eventually lost the elections on 2 December,2016 to Adama Barrow, a property developer who once worked as a security guard in Argos Catalogue Store in the United Kingdom. (That’s story for another day). He conceded defeat and this has brought another twist to his reputation internationally despite his authoritarian rule in the past 22years.
Well, Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan commended Jammeh’s decision to concede defeat in his Facebook wall and this has attracted a lot of shares and comments. Apparently, GEJ is now the hero of Nigerians as he becomes more appreciated ever since he left power. bow is what he wrote on facebook:
I commend President Yahya Jammeh for conceding to Mr. Adama Barrow, who won majority votes during Gambia’s Presidential election. This is an exemplary conduct which is worthy of emulation and Africa is very proud of Mr. Jammeh. In the eyes of many, myself included, he stands taller today than at any other time during his twenty two years in office. It is my hope that his legacy of advancing the progress of The Gambia in all fronts over the years will be remembered and appreciated by all. GEJ.
