This report by CCTV’s Deji Badmus says that out of the 300 million illicit weapons in circulation in Nigeria, about 4.5 million light weapons are in active use. It stated that 1 in 45 persons in the country has an illicit weapon in possession.

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa recently warned that the number of illicit small arms and light weapons in circulation in Nigeria has reached an alarming proportion adding that if urgent actions were not taken it could have dire consequences on the country and the sub-region.

Nigeria is currently battling internal conflict in different parts of the country and analysts say the crises are being fueled by the proliferation of illicit arms.
