Most men’s inability to do house work is entrenched in the long age tradition of a man fending for the family. The mothers also instil same in their male children as they are allowed to play football, go for swimming, horse riding, biking etc. While the girl child sits in the home and do the chores. The boys are not given a sense of homely responsibilities and detach themselves from such. When they leave home, the wealthy boys cum young men stay in a guest house where the upkeep of the room is done by a maid and eat in a restaurant where the food is cooked by a chef. The less rich boys cum young men depend on girlfriends or female friends to cook their meals and clean after them. Still, some try to do it themselves but find it very chaotic as they are not built to multi task.

When asked who is your dream husband? The modern day woman responds ‘A man who is financially stable and who helps around the house.’ Most married women have tried to train their husbands in the area of house chores especially when the couples decide not to have a house help. Once the children start coming in, the man needs to help around to relieve the woman of the burden.

Most times, the men believe that helping around the house diminishes their masculinity and bestows upon them feminine features. They deliberately stay away and surf sports channel because of the feeling of entitlement. Even when both parties work, they still believe it is the woman’s duty to do the domestic chores.

I believe the next generation might make it a requirement for a man to be homely before they even consider him for marriage, it is all part of women emancipation. No wonder the clamour for men to pay their wives who stay home and take care of the kids and the domestic chores is very much alive and active.
